Computer security is important for all users, and easily get hack by hacker or infected by malicious software if the computer security is not set properly or not enable. Now all windows users will get the Windows security alert if some of the standard security is not enable on Windows, but is not 100% that all standard Windows security have been enabled and the Windows will not infected by malicious software. User Account Control (UAC)
User Account Control is security feature from Microsoft Vista. Some user will feel that UAC prompts are annoying, so they will disable UAC just to stop to seeing these prompts. Norton Security Inspector is a tool that you can use to check your computer’s security settings and configure them according to your personal preferences.
Norton Security Inspector checks the following:
- Whether your browser settings are set to a secure level
- Whether Norton Internet Security is configured to protect installed IM clients (for example whether IM scanning is on, if you’ve got a relevant IM client installed)
- Whether any attempts have been made to modify your hosts file (for example redirecting your local host entry)
- Whether your computer has insecure shared folder settings (for example if there are global shares – C$ D$ etc, enabled, system folders are shared, hidden shares, etc.) – SI can close undesirable shares
- Displays a list of user accounts that have more rights (admin privileges) than they need
- Checks for windows services that should be configured to start manually rather than automatically, and services that should be configured not to start. The “fix” operation will only allow the user to change each service to start (or not start) according to our recommendation.
- Whether your machine has Windows user accounts with weak passwords.
Norton Security Inspector can only install on computer that have Norton Internet Security 2009 installed.
Norton Safe Web
Norton Safe Web is a new Web safety solution based on Symantec’s automated analysis of Web sites in order to determine their potential impact on user’s computer. It will display the visual site ratings within everyday search results from top search sites like Google, Yahoo! and Live Search. Additionally, due to the nature of security threats on the Web, Norton Safe Web will also warn users before visit a site that contains malicious content.
Same as Norton Security Inspector, Norton Safe Web can only install on computer that have Norton Internet Security 2009 installed. But there is an alternative for users who want this kind of feature, they can install McAfee SiteAdvisor for Firefox browser and IE browser.
