How to Configure Folder Description When Mouse Over

Folder.pngDescription for each file will be pop-up when mouse over in Windows, this will let user know what the file about before there open. But if having more files in the same location, is will become difficult to user to know which file they need to open. This is recommended for users to manage their file by different folders, so that easy for them to search which files they need. If more folders has been created also will confuse user, for this issues user can configure the folder description when mouse over.

Configure folder description when mouse over can let user know what files are been stored in the folder before users access to the folder, users can save time by access to correct file in the correct folder. Below is the step on how to configure folder description when mouse over.

  • Create a new Notepad *.txt file and type in the following:
    [.ShellClassInfo]
    InfoTip=Type your detailed description
  • Save the file as Desktop.ini and copy it into the folder you want to describe
  • Go to File > Save and close Notepad
  • Click Start > Run, type in the command line, ATTRIB +S “folder name” (e.g. ATTRIB +S ” C:\Documents and Settings\[your userid]\My Documents”)
  • Ok done, you will see the folder description pop-up when mouse over.

Note: If don’t see a pop-up when mouse over a folder, you need to perform some extra step as below.

  • Go to Tools.
  • Under Folder Options and then select the View tab.
  • In the Advanced Settings list, select the check boxes for Display File Size Information In Folder Tips and Show Pop-Up Description For Folder And Desktop Items.
  • Click OK.
